Taste the Rainbow

Antioxidants protect your cells from free radicals.  Free radicals are toxic molecules that are produced when your body breaks down food, or by environmental substances such as cigarette smoke, sunlight or pesticides.  Though some free radicals are beneficial for immune function, most are harmful and can damage our healthy cells through a process called oxidation.  Oxidation is thought to be a factor in the development of certain diseases including heart disease and cancer.

Luckily, our bodies produce antioxidants to help neutralize these harmful free radicals.  We can up our intake of antioxidants by eating a well balanced, colorful diet. The following foods are particularly good sources:

Berries:  blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries

Beans:  red, kidney, pinto and black

Fruit:  apples, avocados, cherries, pears and plums

Vegetables:  artichokes, spinach, red cabbage, potatoes and broccoli

Beverages: green tea, coffee, red wine and pomegranate

Nuts:  walnuts, pistachios, pecans and hazelnuts

And most importantly, dark chocolate!

  1. Jamie,
It is so appealing to have such color on your plate! I love everything you list as good sources of antioxidants, if I would only eat them everyday. I noticed the coffee and the wine, does it matter what kind of coffee or is there a particular red wine that works best?

  2. Hi Jamie!
I loved the last part... more importantly, dark chocolate! :) I sound like an idiot asking this but if green tea is an antioxidant, is regular tea? This blog was a great reminder about defining free radicals and you made it sound much simpler than a text book would. I like that!

  3. Thanks for the great post on antioxidant rich food and how they help rid out bodies of the harmful free radicals. I had no idea that beans were good sources of antioxidants. I have heard that more than one glass of wine is "overkill" while just one glass provides enough antioxidant support then again I have also heard that red wine does not contain as many antioxidants as we would like to think it does.
